–Idi Amin today!! You might be in wonderland; why Idi Amin not Valentine’s Day? Who is Idi Amin? Yah am serving you history today on your plate and I hope you enjoy it. Bon appétit: History recipes!! Ahah
Well; Idi Amin Dada was the third President of Uganda, ruling from 1971 to 1979. He declared himself president of Uganda on 2nd Feb 1971. If I may ask, if this month (February 2017) was 1971 and last week was Tuesday 2nd, he declared himself president of Uganda. Where would you be now and doing what? Protesting on the streets; Rioting; flee to exile; create forgery documents to a top cream job/position in his cabinet, in church praying for God’s mercy, Campaigning/ rigging votes to be MP of your village County, Hiding in the ceiling of your house or celebrating the new president.
Whatever you would be doing now, where, how; thank God it’s 2017. Anyway……
He gave himself the titles of, His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular as reported in “A Clown Drenched in Brutality”, Sunday Times, 27 July 2003.
Don’t ask me why. I don’t know and can’t explain. I wasn’t yet born by that time. Am a typical millennial. God knew I would not handle being in such regime. However, I have great admirations for those that went through it all and witnessed some of the most gruesome ordeal of his regime, persevered and now live to share the tale to this digital age.
To many Idi Amin is branded as a monster, Racist, clown, killer, brutal tyrant, cruel dictator, human butcher who gave 90 days to Asians to leave the country including their properties and businesses in the name of Africanizing the economy. His death in Saudi Arabia- which defined justice for his act, called for grand celebrations to most Ugandan families that suffered and lost their loved ones under his cruel despot.
On a flip side, despite his extremely indescribable brutal dictatorship and massive killing of innocent elite, young, adult Ugandans and foreigners in Uganda, he is still looked at by others as a role model and super hero. Because of his courage, fearlessness, strong patriotic spirit for his country & Africa and being a good kick boxer. Don’t stone me here!!!
Whether you refer to him as bad or good, he built himself a legacy that will never be forgotten on the face of the earth. Popular worldwide, making Uganda popular as well.
