Webometrics Rankings 2024 for top universities in Uganda have been released. Makerere University has retained the top spot. Find out which are the other top 10 universities in Uganda.
Grislybuzz ranks top Universities in Uganda 2020, which lists the country’s top Public and Private Universities.
The ranking is based on journalsconsortium.org Ranking Methodology 2015. The rankings take into account schools’ research performance, as well as their position globally and Africa.
These are the top 10 universities in Uganda.
1. Makerere University
Makerere University which was first established as a technical school in 1922 is Uganda’s largest and oldest university. It became an independent National University in 1970. The University has, over the years, positioned itself as the one of the best Universities in Africa.
U.S. News & World Report has ranked Makerere University as the 23rd best university in Africa and the 757th best university worldwide which means Makerere is the highest-ranked university in sub-Saharan Africa.
2. Mbarara University of Science & Technology.
Mbarara University of Science and Technology(MUST), commonly known as Mbarara University, is a public university in Uganda. Mbarara University was opened to students in 1989. MUST is accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education. It is located in western Uganda, Mbarara district.
3. Kampala International University.
Kampala International University commonly known as KIU has its main campus in Kansaga, Kampala, and has other campuses in western Uganda, as well as in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi.
KIU was established in 2001, and currently has the largest teaching and referral hospital university in the country, as well as a 5000-seater library. KIU offers certificate courses, diploma’s, bachelors’ and masters programmes.
4. Gulu Univeristy.
Gulu University was established in 2001, The university commenced teaching activities in September 2002 at its campus at the District Farm Institute, Laaro division, Gulu municipality. The University aims to provide access to higher education and research while conducting quality professional training geared towards delivering appropriate services focusing on community transformation.
5. Busitema University.
Busitema University is one of the top 10 universities in Uganda, – located in the Eastern region of Uganda. Its main campus is at Busitema, with other campuses at Nagongera, Namasagali, Mbale, Pallisa, Arapai and Kaliro. The University took in its first students on 3rd October, 2007. The University focuses on relevant and critical study programs 0f Science and Technology.
6. Kyambogo University.
Kyambogo University was established in 2003 following a merger between Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education. Kyambogo aims to promote knowledge in Science, Technology and Education with regard to progress, quality, equity, and transformation of society.
7. Kabale University
Founded in 2001, Kabale University is a non-profit University situated in Kabale town in the Western Region. It is officially recognized by the National Council for Higher Education of Uganda. Kabale University (KAB) has a relatively small student body, with an enrollment range of 3,000 to 3,999 students, and operates as a coeducational institution in Uganda.

8. Uganda Martyrs University
Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) is private faith-based affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda. UMU was started back in 1993 with only 84 students, and has since grown its student population to 5000. This University is located in Kampala, with other campuses at Masaka, Lira, Mbale and Kabale.

9. Mountains of the Moon University
Mountains of the Moon University is a public university located in Uganda. Originally established as a private, non-profit institution, it transitioned into a public university following an executive directive issued in January 2018. The university derives its name from the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the Mountains of the Moon.
7. Makerere University Business School.
MUBS was established in 1997 with the aim of providing business and management studies in Uganda. MUBS was a constituent college of Makerere University for business studies. However this arrangement did not work, as the main Makerere introduced competing duplicate courses at the main campus, which MUBS protested and asked for complete autonomy. Finally in 2012, the autonomy sought by MUBS was granted by the Uganda Ministry of Education and Sports. The University offers certificates, Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgruate studies.
10. Islamic University in Uganda
The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) was opened in 1988 by the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) and is multi-campus university offering courses at certificate, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The main campus of the university is in Mbale with branches in Kampala, Kabojja(Female’s campus), Arua, and Kibuli Hill.
9. Uganda Christian University
Uganda Christian University (UCU) is a private church-founded university administered by the Church of Uganda. UCU became the first private university to be chartered or accredited by the government of Uganda. The University has regionally constituent colleges like Bishop Barham University College located in the city of Kabale, UCU Mbale campuse, located in Mbale and UCU Arua campus.
