Uganda defeated Burundi 3-1 as Uganda win first Cefacafe women’s championship, which concluded earlier today at the Fufa Technical Centre in Njeru. Sandra Nabweteme scored the opening goal in the second minute and another in stoppage time as Uganda won their first-ever Cecafa Women’s Championship.
The final was the first for both sides, who had come to the event to prove that they deserved to represent the region in the Africa Women Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco from July 2 to 23.
Uganda, buoyed by a large crowd that endured the afternoon heat, hung in there after scoring in the second minute, but missed chances for the duration of the first half.
Their efforts were eventually rewarded when Nabweteme turned provider in the 43rd minute, finding Fazila Ikwaput.
The second half was more difficult. Charlotte Irankunda halved Burundi’s deficit three minutes into the second half as she hit Daisy Nakaziro’s top corner. Only Burundi have managed to score against Uganda’s goalie once in each of their two encounters, and she rightly won the best goalkeeper’s glove.
Burundi gained momentum thanks to Irankunda’s goal, which took the sting out of Uganda and their difficulty adjusting to the long ball football. Ironically, Nabweteme scored the third goal after getting on the end of a long ball from defender Aisha Nantongo and beating the Burundi defence to the far top corner.
The Ugandan players received Shs20 million in cash from the principal guest, Rt. Hon Speaker Anitah Among.
